Why Abhyanga?
Abhyanga is the practice of warm herbal oil applied to the skin with rhythmic strokes. In classical daily routine (dinacharya), it is praised for calming the nervous system, supporting skin and muscle tone, and preparing the body for sleep.
A realistic home routine
- Use small quantities of suitable oil warmed lightly (sesame-based blends are common in cooler seasons; lighter oils may suit summer—ask your physician).
- Spend 5–10 minutes before bath: scalp (if appropriate), ears, limbs, joints, and feet.
- Follow with a warm shower to remove excess oil without stripping the skin.
Who should seek guidance first?
People with acute fever, certain skin infections, open wounds, or recent surgery should postpone self-massage and ask their doctor.
Clinic vs home
In-centre Abhyanga uses therapist technique and often stronger herbal formulations for specific protocols. Home practice maintains continuity between visits.
